Gili Trawangan isn’t just famous for its nightlife — it’s also home to “Secrets,” a playful right-hand reef break offering waves for all levels. Beginners can catch mellow rides near the reef’s end, while advanced surfers score hollow walls perfect for barrels. With warm water, laid-back charm, and easy access from Lombok, Gili T delivers both waves and adventure.

Gili Trawangan, known for its bustling nightlife and diverse range of activities, Gili Trawangan attracts surfers who enjoy a mix of adventure both on and off the water.

The main surf spot on Gili Trawangan is located on the southeastern coast and is known to locals as “Secrets.” This right-hand reef break offers two peaks suitable for different skill levels. When the swell is
medium-sized, it provides a good spot for beginners near the end of the reef. More advanced surfers will appreciate the outer break, where the wave takes off with a fairly easy start before jacking up into long,
hollow walls perfect for barrel rides. On bigger days, this wave can become a serious challenge.

Gili Trawangan’s waves work best at mid to high tide, with optimal conditions during north-east or light winds.

Access to the break is straightforward. Paddle out from the beach a short 50m through the key. The island itself is easily navigable by bike or on foot, and there are plenty of places to stay, from budget-friendly bungalows to more upscale resorts.

Gili Trawangan FAQ

Where is the surf spot on Gili T?

The main break is called “Secrets”, located off the southeastern coast of the island near the harbor. Despite the name, it is easy to find!

Is it good for beginners?

Yes! Unlike many heavy reef breaks, Secrets has a section near the end of the reef that offers mellow rides suitable for beginners, especially on medium-sized days. Always be mindful of the coral bottom, though.

What is the best tide for Gili T?

The wave works best at mid to high tide. At dead low tide, the reef becomes very exposed, making it dangerous to surf or paddle in/out.

Do I need a boat to get to Secrets?

No. It has one of the easiest accesses in the Gilis. You can paddle out just 50 meters from the beach. Look for the “keyhole” (channel) in the reef to paddle out safely without walking on sharp coral.

What else does Gili T offer?

It is the most energetic of the three Gili Islands. Famous for its nightlife, diving, and dining scene, it’s the perfect place to combine a surf trip with partying and social activities.
